A Brief History of Berthoud
Berthoud’s story begins in the early 1860s, when settlers first arrived in the area drawn by the Colorado Gold Rush. Many of these early homesteaders found the arid prairie too difficult to farm and moved on, leaving the land to hardier ranchers and farmers who worked the river bottom along the Little Thompson.
The town’s true founding came in 1872, when Lewis Cross, a former miner turned rancher, staked a homestead claim at the site where the Colorado Central Railroad planned to cross Little Thompson Creek. When the tracks were completed in 1877, the small settlement, originally called Little Thompson, was renamed Berthoud in honor of Edward L. Berthoud, the engineer who surveyed the rail route through the valley.
Over the following decades, Berthoud grew from a scattering of homes and a blacksmith shop into a thriving agricultural community. Farmers irrigated the uplands using water diverted from the Little and Big Thompson Rivers, growing alfalfa, sugar beets, wheat, and corn. In the winter of 1883 and 1884, several town buildings were physically relocated to higher ground on a bluff north of the river, a move prompted by the difficulty steam locomotives faced climbing out of the valley.
By the early 1900s, Berthoud had a growing business district, and in the 1920s, Mountain Avenue became part of U.S. Highway 287, connecting the town to the broader northern Colorado region.
