What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies in Northern CO come in many forms. All of the following may require immediate care by a qualified medical professional:

  • Toothaches
  • Cut to the tongue, lip, or cheek
  • Knocked out tooth
All of the Following May Require Immediate Care by a Qualified Medical Professional:
  • Toothaches: If you’re experiencing pain in one of your teeth, it may be vital that you see your dentist. Be sure to clean the affected tooth, rinsing your mouth with warm water, and using dental floss as needed to break loose food remnants. If the area around the tooth swells or your face begins to swell, apply a cold compress, and get in touch with your dentist right away.
  • Cut to the tongue, lip, or cheek: Apply ice or a cold compress to the injured area. If the injury is bleeding, use gauze or a cloth to put firm, but gentle pressure on the cut. If bleeding continues even after applying pressure, it’s important that you see a doctor or visit an emergency room if after hours.
  • Knocked out tooth: If you can, find the tooth that’s been knocked out and be sure to not handle it excessively or touch the root of it at all. Once you locate the tooth, you can try reinserting it into the socket and keeping it in place by carefully biting down on gauze. Sometimes, the tooth cannot be reinserted, which is ok, but proper procedures must be followed in this case to preserve the tooth. You must act quickly to place the tooth in a cup with the saliva of the person who lost it. You can also place the tooth in milk, but do not use water. It is necessary that the person who lost the tooth see a dentist immediately.
